The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) will open its tokenization service for commercial access this month. According to DTCC's overview document released on October 16, the service will initially support 25 tokenizable securities, with approximately $30 trillion in assets under DTC custody. It is worth noting that this figure refers to the 'scale of assets eligible for tokenization', rather than the actual issuance volume on the chain.
The initial running networks will be Canton Network (CIP-56) and DTCC's private Besu network (ERC-20). Stellar (SEP-41) and Circle's Arc (ERC-20) are listed as 'expected to join in 2027', rather than being part of the initial launch. The first batch of supported assets includes Russell 1000 stocks, some ETFs, and US Treasury bonds. Tokens will maintain a 1:1 correspondence with the underlying securities, using the same CUSIP, and rights and investor protection will be consistent with traditional securities, with official records still held by DTC.
In terms of operation, 24/7 peer-to-peer transfers are supported between DTC-registered wallets; conversions between traditional securities and tokens can be done through UI or API between 2:00 and 18:00 ET, with a target processing time of 15 minutes or less. Interest and maturity payments for Treasury bonds will initially be made in fiat currency to participants' traditional accounts, with digital cash and on-chain net settlement planned for 2027 and later.
Rhett Fintech's perspective: The core significance of DTCC's opening this time lies not in '$30 trillion being put on the chain immediately', but in establishing a qualification framework for official clearing infrastructure for the conversion between traditional securities and on-chain forms. The initial range of 25 securities, closed networks, and phased roadmap indicate that the logic for promoting institutional-level tokenization is 'compliance access prioritized over scale expansion'. For RWA project parties, this means that future access standards for mainstream clearing systems will become clearer, but admission qualifications and compliance requirements will also be tightened accordingly.
